Dating Black Men: A Straightforward Guide

This guide is for women who want to date Black men and would rather be open and respectful than guess. It covers the profile, the first message, the conversation and the first meeting. None of it is complicated, and all of it works better when you treat the man you are talking to as an individual first.

  1. Build a profile that sounds like you

Most people read a profile before they decide whether to reply. Use recent photos that show your face, say what you like to do with a free weekend, and say what you are looking for in plain words, whether that is something casual or something that could grow. A clear profile helps the right people reply.

  2. Reply to what he wrote, not to his race

Read his profile and pick one real detail, such as a place he mentions, a hobby or a line that made you smile. Ask one question about it. Skip compliments that could be about anyone, and skip any opener that is only about him being Black. A specific message shows you read what he wrote.

  3. Say what you are looking for

Some members want a casual connection, some want a relationship and some are open to either. Say which one you are, and ask what he wants. Honesty at the start is respectful, and it is the quickest way to find someone who wants the same thing you do.

  4. Talk about race the way you would talk about anything else

If you are dating across races, curiosity is fine, and so is a question asked with respect. Let him share things in his own time. Do not ask him to speak for all Black men, do not assume what his life has been like, and do not treat him as a type or a fantasy.

  5. Take your time before you meet

Once the conversation feels easy, you can suggest something simple in a public place, such as coffee or a drink. You set the pace. It is fine to say not yet, and a man who respects you will accept that.

  6. Meet safely

Choose a public place, tell a friend where you are going and arrange your own way there and back. Keep personal details to yourself until you trust the person, leave if anything feels wrong, and expect him to respect it at once if you want to go.
